to achieve his oh joe t. From what I gathered during my
subsequent stay at Dhahran it sooms likely that there
are two schools of thought in that Company. Ono is
that thoy havo plenty to keop thorn busy on land and do
not want to get involved in a sea-bed operation and
that thereforo it doos not much matter to them where this
lino is drawn. The other is that in tho interests of
their long-torm association with Saudi Arabia they aro
bound to give tho King tho best possible advice in his
favour. I expect that tho latter will prevail. But it is
possible that thoro will emorgo from Aramco a suggestion
for some kind of sharing of any oil that may bo found in
this area. This.might, as has boon agreed in previous
correspondence, bo in tho last resort accoptablo to. us if
nothing better can bo obtained. Shaikh Yusuf's mind seemed
to bo running more on the idea that Kashi bu Saafa itsolf
might bo divided as a separate entity but that the
gonoral boundary should remain more or less as drav/n by
both tho British and Saudi dologations at the 19131 talks,
o.g. by splitting tho comparatively small difference
between tho two lines produced on that occasion. I refer
below to the gonoral question of how far v/o could or ought
to be prepared to bargain concessions over other matters
in return for Saudi acceptance of our proposals in this
question.
