#2.LW1 2018 Livio Felluga Colli Orientali / Pinot Grigio DOC Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy
The winery was founded in 1956, after Livio Felluga relocated from his native Istria, but the family’s winemaking traditions date back to the mid-19th
century. Now in his 90s, founder and patriarch Livio Felluga is accredited with innovating and mastering modern wine making in Italy. His reputation
for creating exceptionally lush, crisp and well-balanced wines extends well beyond the region of Friuli. His wines are recognized the world over as the
finest in their categories.
“Brilliant yellow in color, this wine offers complex, rich and multi-layered aromas of orange blossom, daisy, white wisteria, apricot, peach, white melon and
yellow peach. Sweet sensations of custard and creme brule are in perfect balance with the freshness of citrus fruit. On the palate, it is complex, fresh and
velvety, echoing the nose with notes of pineapple, melon, Nashi pear, yellow peach and sweet pastry. The finish is fresh, tense and very persistent with citrus,
white fruit, and pleasant savory notes. A particularly good match for fish, seashell, risottos and baked vegetables”.
#1.LW1 2018 Ronco dei Tassi Tocai Fruilano / Fruilano DOC Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy
Ronco dei Tassi estate was started in 1989 when Fabio Coser and his wife Daniela decided to buy a property of about 22 acres of which 10, already planted
to vines in the heart of the Collio Goriziano, in the township of Cormons. This zone, which ranges from 400 to 600 feet, a.s.l., lies at the boundary with a
natural oasis called Plessiva. This is a natural park protected by the Friuli Region and as such provides safe haven and an ideal habitat for our local flora
and fauna in which to flourish. The name of the estate comes from the way we planted our vineyard using terracing (ronchi) to expose our plants and our
grapes to the maximum amount of sunlight, and to a local peculiarity namely the bands of badgers (tassi) that visit our property without fail at the time
of harvest enjoying our sweetest and most succulent grapes.
“Six months elevage (ageing), partly in stainless steel and partly in second use barriques. Straw yellow and floral nosed in its youth, spicy and complex as it
evolves. Velvet textured, the palate recalls citrus and pear with intriguing nuances of liquorice and herbs.
#3.LW1 2015 Terlano Vorberg Riserva / Pinot Bianco DOCG Alto-Adige, Italy
The south-facing slopes of Monzoccolo in the Terlano DOC area are the location of steep and sunny vineyards at altitudes between 450 and 950 meters
above sea-level, where a very exciting Pinot Bianco flourishes. This rich and highly complex wine is impressive for its minerality and considerable
capacity for development and thus underscores the full potential of this grape variety.
“The vines that produce this wine cling to steeply angled, south-facing slopes that reach up to 2,900 feet in altitude, requiring hand-harvesting of the sun-
drenched fruit. In 2015, they produced a wine that’s layered and complex, opening with notes of golden apple, lemon curd and pulverized white rock. Bright
acidity propels the flavors, even as ample alcohol and a leesy softness lend depth and texture. The oak influence is deftly handled, opening the way for a clean,
mineral finish”. Decanter.
#2.LW1 2018 Pieropan La Rocca Soave Classico / Gargenega DOCG Veneto, Italy
Pieropan’s estate covers 58 hectares of vineyard which are situated on the stony hills of Soave Classico. The Pieropan family has been producing wines in
Soave since the 1890s. Indeed, they were the first producer to bottle a wine with the name Soave on the label in the early 1930s. Nino Pieropan took over
from his father in 1970 and was the first producer in Soave to make a single-vineyard wine, ‘Calvarino’, in 1971. Nino’s two sons, Andrea and Dario, took
over the running of the estate in 2017 when Nino fell ill and before he passed away in April 2018. From the 2015 vintage onwards, all Pieropan wines are
organically certified.
The grapes were grown in the vineyard of ‘La Rocca’, which takes its name from the adjacent medieval castle and fortress (“La Rocca”) that dominate the
town of Soave, just east of Verona. The soil in La Rocca is unique in Soave in that it is a limestone outcrop (the same soil as in Valpolicella Classico) in
a sea of basalt. Because of this soil, the family feels they get sufficient ripeness in the Garganega to make a wine solely from this variety. Perfect pairing
with roast chicken, or a variety of seafood.
“100% Garganega, from the La Rocca vineyard on chalky soil at 200m-300m, where the grapes are smaller and thicker-skinned, and picked when very ripe.
Full of restrained, fresh apricot fruit in a kind of Marsanne-Roussanne style. Lemon-leaf freshness, dried banana and the toastiness of the oak on the nose,
silky and delicate with moderate yet refreshing acidity; vibrant and imperceptibly tannic”. Antoni Galloni
