They fly back to Mexico for the winter. There were
thousands of them on an island off in the watery
distance. They like to be on an island, safe from coyotes
and foxes.
The families thought they would walk quietly toward
the pelicans and watch them for awhile. The closer they
got, the more dazzling the white of the feathers and the
orange of the beaks and around the eyes. Just then, a
huge bird flew over and landed right in front of them.
He cocked his head at Gallina, as if he knew her.
Everyone just sat down, their legs wobbly and without
power. The pelican began to speak and nobody in the
group could move.
He began to speak in a strange bassoon-like tone.
