Page 60 - Up Up and Away

Our pelicans were struggling to feed their young, and
many chicks could not be kept alive. When the days
started to get longer, a few adventuresome young birds
flew off to find new places to fish and raise their young.
As you see, we are powerful flyers. The ones who left did
not come back until the days started to get shorter. The
clan was surprised one day when the group returned,
with their new young ones. They told a story of a great
land to the north, where there were no jungles at all. It
was quite cool there, compared with Mexico and the land
was flat and grassy. But there were lakes and rivers with
fish and good protected areas for keeping safe from
predators. This news was welcome, and ever after in
spring, the pelican flock flew to this wide open country,
returning to the jungle in the fall, when the harsh winter
approached. And that is how we came to be here in this
beautiful place.
Twinkle looked over at her parents, and noticed that
they both looked sad.
