There was nothing they could do right then except keep
Joe calm and wait until they landed. How would he get
home? His parents would be frantic. After all, pelicans
don't have cell phones or e-mail, as far they knew. The
girls decided to keep quiet about Joe until they landed,
which was coming up soon, by the sound of the engines.
The landing at Gustavus was smooth and a bus was
waiting to take them to Glacier Bay Lodge, where Gallina
had made reservations that morning. Joe was hiding in
Mirabel's food bag. He really loved her. She hoped she
could help him with his very serious dilemma.
Glacier Bay Lodge was a charming place on the water,
with comfortable rooms and a good dinner in the dining
room. Joe stayed quiet in the bag all through dinner,
although it was odd that nobody noticed the bag
wiggling. Mirabel slipped him a piece of salmon that she
ordered especially, knowing that Joe would be able to eat
that. Then Mirabel's mum said, "What are you putting in
your bag there Mirabel?"
