• Tunicates exhibit typical chordate characteristics in
their larval stage.
• Deterostome development is a fundamental trait that
must have evolved in a shared ancestor of
echinoderms and chordates.
• Echinoderms
• Even though the classes of echinoderms use their tube
feet differently, they all have them.
• Adult radial symmetry, a water vascular system, and
endoskeletons with spines are the characteristics
specific to echinoderms.
• Invertebrate chordates exhibit an endostyle that is the
precursor of the thyroid gland in vertebrates.
• Echinoderms also use tube feet for respiration.
