The mantle is a defining characteristic of mollusks that has

evolved different functions in different members of the

               phylum.

The mantle excretes a coating around a foreign object to

               protect the mollusk.

A siphon is a tube that leaves the mantle cavity of a large

mollusk. Pushing water out of it can cause the animal to

               move very rapidly.

The foot of a cephalopod is divided into tentacles and arms.

               Bivalves have two shells.

The muscular gizzard is used to grind food particles. Crop

is a storage area. Setae are tiny bristles that push into the

soil and anchor the worms during movement. Gills are

structures often used by aquatic organisms for respiration.

Parapodia are a structure unique to polychaetes and are

               used for swimming and crawling.
