              Test for Purity: Add 1 ml of FeCl3 to 1ml 5% alcoholic solution of menthol;
              no color in produced (Phenolic impurties are absent).

              Assay: 1-HPLC.       2-Being an alcohol, it can be acetylated by acetic anhydride
              to give menthyl acetate. The ester is separated washed with water and saponified
              with a known excess of alcoholic KOH to give the free alcohol and CH 3COOK.
              The excess KOH is back titrated against standard HC1.

              Menthol medical and industrial use is versatile, from food flavor to

              pharmaceutical products being antispasmodic, and improve the liver functions
              and prevent calculi formations.
