In Memoriam

        Remembering John Roland

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of John Roland on January 23,
2023. Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers as they seek comfort during
this difficult time – he was a devoted husband, father, and son.
In addition to those roles, he also served as our coworker, mentor, and friend. We will
forever appreciate his willingness to share his experiences and advice not only in the
halls of MIL but also as a volunteer to organizations such as Junior Achievement of
Greater Washington and Kappa Alpha Psi, Fraternity, Inc., to name just a few.
After almost four decades of working in the financial management industry, John
was an expert in federal government accounting and external reporting. And, after 17
years leading key programs at MIL, John retired, but he remained actively engaged
in the financial industry. He was recognized by Northern Virginia Magazine as a
Top Financial Professional in September 2022 and at the time of his passing, was the
President and CEO of Roland QBO Financials. His enthusiasm for all things accounting
was known by all those who encountered him. In fact, a running joke that he embraced
was that he tucked himself into bed each night under spreadsheets.
To be sure, John had an illustrious career but to those that knew him, he was much
more than his professional achievements and accomplishments. He will be fondly remembered for his extraordinary sense of
humor, his creative storytelling, and his passion for his numerous collections. He was a proud alumnus of Chancellor University
(B.S., Accounting, summa cum laude), Carnegie-Mellon University (M.S., Public Policy, Financial Analysis, and Management),
and John F. Kennedy High School where he was recently selected as the keynote speaker at their commencement ceremony.
As many of you held John in such high esteem, we are planning an MIL Memorial Service so that those who worked so closely
with him over the years can share in celebrating his life. You may wish to seek guidance during this troubling time. Please know
that MIL’s Employee Assistance Program is available to support you.
