A gilt-bronze ‘qilin’ seal
Ming Dynasty
The rectangular seal surmounted by a seated qilin
with its head raised, cast on the underside with
eight characters in seal script, reading Anxi jiangjun
sima zhi yin (Seal of General Sima of Anxi).

translated as ‘Seal of General Sima of Anxi.’
On the side of the seal is also inscribed: 建墨

A ‘chicken blood’ soapstone ‘Buddhist
lion’ seal
18th century, cyclically dated yihai year (AD1755)
The square seal surmounted by a recumbent
Buddhist lion with its single-horned head turned
to the left, depicted with bulging eyes and a long
stout tail, the side incised with a seal mark jinshi
tongshou and a three-character inscription yihai
nian, the stone of a creamy white tone with mottled
orange-red inclusions.
