A Nepalese gem and hardstone-inlaid
filigree box and cover
19th century
The rectangular box raised on four lobed feet each
terminating in a five-clawed paw set with emeralds,
the sides of the box each heavily embellished
with coral flanked by turquoise and four smaller
emeralds, all on a scrolling filigree ground, the
cover elaborately set with a figure of Sakyamuni
Buddha, the body inlaid with emeralds and the
robe with pearls, the figure holding a gilt cup and
seated on a lapis lazuli lotus pedestal, all against
a ground densely inlaid with rubies, garnets and
emeralds in a floral pattern, the cover rim bordered
with pearls.
