A pair of massive Canton famille rose vases
19th century
Each boldly enamelled on the body with two rectangular cartouches,
one containing an energetic battle scene with soldiers on horseback
pouring from behind hillsides, the other with a dignitary seated at his
desk within a crowded chamber observing an opera performance,
the cartouches each divided by a phoenix between two leaf and
pomegranate-shaped cartouches containing flowers and figural
scenes above and below, the necks each with similar rectangular
scenes of figures enjoying opera performances flanked by applied
gilt handles each shaped as a Buddhist lion and cub, the remaining
ground covered by a dense floral and fruiting sprays.
