JULIA SHACKELFORD HUNTER COLLECTION OF SNUFF BOTTLES

                                Christie’s are delighted to be entrusted with this 25-lot
                                consignment of snuf bottles from the collection of Julia
                                Shackelford Hunter (1919 - 2014). Julia Shackelford married
                                Freelon Hunter in July 1948 and, later the same year, they travelled
                                to Shanghai, where Freelon took up a posting in the Finance
                                Department with General Electric. It was in Shanghai that
                                they developed a fascination with this miniature art form. They
                                assembled their collection of snuf bottles in 1948 and early 1949.
                                After subsequent postings to Hong Kong, the Philippines and
                                Venezuela, the couple moved back to the United States in 1951.

                                特夫人珍藏中國鼻煙壺。茱莉亞•沙克爾福德女士於1948
                                年7月與弗倫•亨特先生結爲伉儷,同年隨其遠赴上海就
                                職通用公司。在此期間,亨特夫婦與中國藝術結緣,尤
                                爲鼻煙壺小巧精妙的藝術形式所喜,遂於1948至1949
                                年初建立了精美的鼻煙壺收藏。之後亨特夫婦亦旅居香
                                港、菲律賓及委內瑞拉,於1951年返回美國。

                                A WHITE AND RUSSET JADE ‘MELON’ SNUFF BOTTLE
                                18TH-19TH CENTURY

                                清十八/十九世紀 白玉帶皮瓜瓞綿綿鼻煙壺

                                The snuf bottle is carved in the form of a melon growing from a leafy
                                meandering vine, with a small butterfy resting to one side. The stone is of a
                                mottled pale tone with a few minor areas of creamy russet inclusion.
