The fgure is carved wearing long fowing robes and is holding a tall gnarled
staf and a fowering prunus branch. His long beard is fnely incised and he
bears a smiling expression.

The frst is decorated to the back with polychrome ivory depicting two
elegant ladies in an interior on an openwork ground, framed in tortoiseshell
and glazed. The second is mounted in silk, decorated with a phoenix
standing on a rock amidst blossoming fowers.
