A CIZHOU SGRAFFIATO ‘FLORAL-SCROLL’ VASE
Jin/Yuan dynasty
The tall tapered vessel with broad, rounded shoulders and an unglazed
recessed foot, surmounted by a short neck with flaring, sloped lip, the
surfaces covered overall with a white slip and carved through to the
beige-colored body with a broad band of stylized blossoms borne of
foliate scrolls, above bands of scrolling foliage and upright petals, all
beneath a translucent milky glaze.

Samuel Twyford Peters (1854-1921) and his wife nee Adeline Elder
were major early 20th century collectors of Chinese art based in New
York. Mr. Peters was a wealthy coal merchant and trustee of the
Metropolitan Museum of Art, donating 400 pieces of his jade collection
to the Met in 1912 and 1916. Mrs. Peters donated their collection of
Chinese pottery and porcelain--this piece among the group--to the
Met in 1926.
