          A FAMILLE NOIRE ‘MAGPIE AND PRUNUS’ SQUARE-SECTION
          VASE
          19TH CENTURY
          The vase is decorated to each side with birds perched on and in fight above
          dense prunus fowering on gnarled twisted branches amongst rocks and
          bamboo. The shoulder is decorated with aster sprays, and the faring neck is
          decorated with prunus growing from rocks divided by leaf sprays. The base is
          marked with an artemisia leaf in underglaze blue.

          Compare a famille noire square-section vase of very similar size and design
          dated to the Kangxi period from the collection of Anthony de Rothschild
          exhibited at the International Exhibition of Chinese Art 1935-1936, published
          in the Royal Academy of Arts, Catalogue of the International Exhibition of
          Chinese Art 1935-6, London: 1936, p.144, no. 1718.
