A PAINTED WOOD FIGURE OF A BODHISATTVA
SONG-YUAN DYNASTY (960-1368)
The graceful bodhisattva stands on a lotus throne with his hips
swayed slightly to the left, and wears a shawl, a necklace, a scarf
tied across his torso and a long fowing dhoti. His hair is tied in a
topknot behind the foliate crown that is carved with a small fgure
of Buddha. There are traces of gilt and black pigment visible.

A POLYCHROME WOOD CARVING OF
SAMANTABHADRA ON AN ELEPHANT
SONG-YUAN DYNASTY (960-1368)
The Buddhist deity is carved seated in lalitasana on a lotus throne
supported by a caparisoned elephant on a rectangular base. The
eyes are downcast and the hair is worn in a topknot beneath a
crown. The robes are worn loosely draped and open at the chest
to reveal a necklace. There are traces of red, green, blue and black
pigment and gilt.
