A GILT-WOOD FIGURE OF GUANYIN
YUAN-MING DYNASTY (1279-1644)
The bodhisattva is shown seated in dhyanasana
with her left hand resting in dhyanamudra and
the right raised in vitarkamudra. She is wearing
jewellery and long fowing robes that are tied at
the waist. A cowl is draped over her topknot. Her
face with downcast eyes shows a benevolent
expression.

A PAIR OF CARVED WOOD FIGURES OF
GUANYIN ON LIONS
MING DYNASTY, 17TH CENTURY
Guanyin is seated on the lion’s back, the right hand
of one fgure held in vitarkamudra. Each serene
fgure is carved with a full face and downcast
eyes and the hair is swept back from her forehead
and tied beneath a scarf, two plaits fall down her
shoulders. The robes fall in loose drapes and are
open at the chest to reveal a necklace. The lions’
manes, tails and facial features are fnely detailed.
Traces of gilt and red, green and black pigment can
be seen..
