A LARGE DOUCAI ‘BAJIXIANG’ VASE
19TH-20TH CENTURY
The body of the vase is decorated and gilt with the Eight Buddhist Emblems,
bajixiang, amongst densely scrolling lotus below a band of ruyi heads. The neck
is decorated with a pair of confronting kui dragons in between two faux-bamboo
handles. The base with a Guangxu six-character mark in underglaze blue.

PROVENANCE:
Acquired by Finnish writer Martti Larni (1909-1993) in 1959, and then by
descent.
Larni is best known for his satirical works, in particular The Fourth Vertebra,
or a Scamp Despite Himself (1957), a novel about the American lifestyle
which was translated into more than 20 languages and received with great
popularity. He was also the chairman of the Union of Finnish Writers from
1964 to 1967.

A PAIR OF LARGE FAMILLE VERTE VASES
19TH CENTURY
Each vase is decorated to the body with two large
panels containing scenes of warriors engaging in battle
outside a pavilion. There are several smaller cartouches
between the panels, enclosing a bird amongst prunus
and bamboo, and various mountainous landscape
scenes. The neck is decorated with further panels with
court scenes, fowers and birds.
