                                                                                                 A CELADON AND RUSSET JADE CARVING OF
                                                                                                 A BUFFALO AND A ‘RAMS’ GROUP
                                                                                                 QING DYNASTY (1644-1911)

                                                                                                 The recumbent bufalo is carved with curved horns and

                                                                                                 its legs tucked beneath its body, the stone is of a deep

                                                                                                 celadon tone with striking dark russet striations. The

                                                                                                 group is carved to depict a recumbent ram with a young

                                                                                                 lamb nestled at its feet, the stone is of a pale celadon

                                                                                                 tone with some minor russet inclusions.

                                                                                                 The washer is carved in the form of a lotus leaf with

                                                                                                 a lotus fower stemming from its root opposite a

                                                                                                 crane with a lingzhi branch. A catfsh is carved on

                                                                                                 the underside, the stone is of a milky white tone

                                                                                                 with concentrated areas of russet. The pen holder is

                                                                                                 carved in low relief with a bird fying amidst fowering

                                                                                       265       branches, the stone is of an even celadon tone, with a
