PERSONAL LEAVE
Under special circumstances, Jones-Hamilton Co. may grant an unpaid personal leave of
absence. An employee requesting a personal leave of absence must submit the request in
writing, stating the reason for the leave, at least two (2) weeks in advance to his or her
supervisor. In emergency situations, written notice must be provided as soon as possible
under the circumstances. Jones-Hamilton Co. has sole discretion in determining whether
the leave request will be granted.
An employee on an unpaid personal leave of absence is not protected from actions that
would have affected the employee if he or she was not on such leave (e.g., shift eliminated).
Personal Leaves of Absence in excess of 30 days do constitute a break in service and
employees are not guaranteed job reinstatement. Jones-Hamilton Co. will attempt to return
an employee to his or her former position or to a similar position when the employee is able
to return from a personal leave of absence in excess of 30 days. However, the Jones-
Hamilton Co. need to fill a position may override its ability to hold a position open until an
employee returns from a personal leave of absence. Jones-Hamilton Co., therefore, cannot
assure that it will be able to return the employee to any position. Failure to return from a
personal leave of absence upon the expiration of the leave will be considered a voluntary
resignation.
During an unpaid leave of absence, an employee will not receive holiday pay, accrue any
paid time off or receive any sick hour benefits. Such benefits will resume accruing when the
employee returns to work.
Insurance premiums, loan payments, or other payroll deductions normally deducted from
your pay must be paid for during a personal leave of absence.
BEREAVEMENT LEAVE
Jones-Hamilton Co. grants leaves of absence with pay for an appropriate period of time up
to 24 hours (3 days/8 hour shift or 2 days/12 hour shift) to employees in the event of the
death of an immediate family member (spouse, child, (including biological, adopted, and
foster children), stepchild, father, mother, stepparent, brother, sister, stepbrother,
stepsister, grandparent, grandchild, mother/father-in-law, brother/sister-in-law). An
employee needing bereavement leave must notify his/her supervisor of the situation as
soon as possible. The supervisor will then notify Payroll via the time reporting process.
The employee may be required to provide evidence of death and the relationship of the
deceased to the employee before any leave time is paid. The amount of bereavement
leave granted may be dependent upon the relationship to the deceased and/or the location
and need to travel.
MILITARY LEAVE
Military leaves of absence will be granted to employees for military or reserve duty in
accordance with applicable law. An employee may elect to use Paid Time Off for all or
