Blood Administration
Quick Facts
Consent for blood
administration can be witnessed
by any staff member
Blood can be picked up by any
staff member
You will need your UNC photo ID
and the patient name and
medical record number when
picking up blood Vital Signs
Verification of blood must be
done by licensed personnel No sooner than 15 minutes
before the transfusion
5 minutes after the blood
product enters the vein
30 minutes after blood product
enters the vein
At the end of the transfusion
Signs and Symptoms of a Transfusion Reaction
Fever Shortness of breath
Chills Difficulty breathing
Hypertension or Flank pain
Hypotension Chest pain
Flushing Muscle aches
Rash If:
Hives or Itching Restlessness or anxiety A patient receiving a blood transfusion complains of
Nausea and vomiting
any of the signs and symptoms of a transfusion
reaction
Or:
You observe any of the signs and symptoms of a
transfusion reaction
Notify the Nurse Immediately
And
Take the Patient’s Vital Signs
