Levi spoke, as much to calm himself as to say anything worth
hearing. “Hey, lighten up, man. We didn’t set you up. These dog-
faced people took advantage of our hunger: I’m sure we’d do the
same to them if we were larger.”
But he was overheard in the next cage by Billy Bob, who swallowed
a large lump in his throat. “You don’t think they’re going to eat us?”
Levi tried to yawn to show his disdain for their captors, but his jaw
was rattling too hard.
“No way, man. They kill to eat, that’s true, but only those dumb
animals they raise and fatten up in big cages. Of course, if they didn’t,
we would have slim pickings out in the alley. But that’s beside the
point; they also kill for the fun of it, so there’s no limit to their
appetite for murder. One cat, ten cats, a million cats—it’s all the same
to them.”
