The other cat tried to turn its head to face Billy Bob, but gave it up
as too painful. Then he spoke, haltingly.
“Execute us quickly? Not at all: they need us, to have something to
torture. Yes, you will die here, and be replaced—just as you are
replacing the cat who used to live in your cage. He lasted several
weeks before they put him out of his misery. But they have different
ways of making you suffer; perhaps you will be lucky and die before I
do.”
The effort had exhausted him; he closed his eyes and ignored Billy
Bob and everything else around him.
