Eddie Puss, too, was on the verge of hysteria—but he couldn’t get
        any further out of his wits. It was clear to him that all the enemies he
        had ever perceived or conceived were congregated outside his cage,
        taunting and terrifying him with horrible noises, nauseating odors and
        maddening images. That these other cats were themselves imprisoned
        in  identical  conditions  did  not  and  could  not  occur  to  him.  He
        feinted left and right, bouncing off the wire walls and spitting at his
        cellmates.
          “Kill you all! Your fault! Kill!”
          But nobody paid him the slightest bit of attention.
