Chapter Two

              INFORMATION IS

                             POWER

n this chapter, we will show how digital information is
the driving force behind today’s digital world and how
Idigital literacy creates gaps between groups in society.
The digital society relies on information to create profit
and transfer power. The long-term preservation and

extensive dissemination of data are essential in today’s
interconnected society. It is possible to boost the power
of the same information that existed in the analog world
exponentially, by sharing it on digital networks.

Information in the digital world is intangible. It can,
however, last indefinitely once it is recorded. This new
method of exchanging knowledge creates a division
between people who can and cannot use it as a resource.
Information fluency is defined as the capacity to find
data, translate it into information, and apply it offline.
