quite frightening to hear the Holy Spirit telling me to stand up and
challenge this man.
Anyhow, I politely raised my hand and asked if I might be permitted to
say something, and the man said I could. So I stood up. As I did this, a
holy silence filled the room. The atmosphere was very heavy and very
serious. I explained that what had been said did not align with biblical
truth and proceeded to cite three scriptures about Jesus Christ being the
only way to the Father. When I had finished, I sat down with my heart
hammering, and the preacher continued with his sermon.
At the end of the service, he came up to me and said that he disagreed
with me and that God was bigger than just having one way. There were
further instances of heresy being preached in that church, and God used
me on several occasions to bring truth, even though it made me quite
unpopular with some of the people. I found it a very difficult season to
walk through, but some good did come out of the situation, and after I
left, some of that congregation were emboldened to stand up for the
truth of God’s Word.
The chapter continues with the response of the Shulamite. She has
heard the entreaty of the Lord to arise and follow Him, and His
command to now deal with the compromises in her life that would
thwart her fruitfulness. However, her reply indicates that she is not yet
ready for this next step of faith. Yes, she has reached a level of intimacy
with her Beloved and security in her identity as a child of God. She
knows the sound of His voice, understands the call to take up one’s
