what I’ve planted within you. Will you catch them and remove them for
me? We will do it together.” (TPT)
As I prayerfully studied this verse, several things stood out to me.
Firstly, the Bridegroom-King initially says that she must catch these
troubling foxes. Before we can enlist divine help in overcoming our
weaknesses, we must be prepared to acknowledge our faults and
confess them to the Lord.
Secondly, the word “sly” is used to describe the foxes. I believe the
reason for this is that, although we truly want to be free from anything
that would hinder our intimacy with the Lord, deep in our hearts, we
often approach it in the wrong way. Instead of turning to the Lord for
help, we deceive ourselves into thinking that they are not significant
issues and that we can deal with them alone.
I refer to things like gossip, so-called white lies, greed, avarice, anger,
unforgiveness, a loose tongue, and envy—every small appearance of
the old life. These things can overtake us quite suddenly in a sly way,
and before we know it, we have fallen prey to their damaging effects
once more.
In everyone’s life, certain failings seem to crop up time and time again,
and they are troubling to us because we don’t seem able to gain the
victory over them, despite our best intentions.
The Lord’s advice to us in these situations is to persevere in prayer. He
is always willing to help us if we humbly accept our need for Him. It is
