CHAPTER 2
P
arkland High was where we attended school. Jayson and I
went to our lockers, which were at the far end of the school
building. It was a long hallway since the school was big, and
we had to walk about five minutes, our legs shaking and wobbly
because of the distance. But we’d done this before—since we started at
the school, two years ago.
And sometimes, I’d beg Jayson to carry me to our lockers or even
to our classes. He’s done it once before—which was two years ago.
When we finally made it to our lockers—mine was always beside
his—we had the same photo on each locker to prove we were best
friends. That was the pact, and no one could separate us.
Nellie walked over with someone new—a guy with curly brown
hair, a plain white shirt, and khaki shorts. I caught myself staring longer
than I should’ve, tracing from his hazel eyes down to the way he carried
himself.
In my head, I was already spiraling.
Maybe this is it. Maybe this week is finally the start of my
boyfriend plan.
I started thinking about all the things I could list—what it takes to
be a girlfriend, how to actually get a boyfriend, and the kind of guy I
was hoping he’d be. I know that was kind of random, but I had to.
