CHAPTER 4

fter school ended, I walked with Jayson to our
neighbourhood. Normally, Nellie also walks with us, but
since her parents got a new car last month, she’s been
getting princess–car treatment—which means car rides home every
day. In a Mercedes–Benz.
Sometimes I wonder if she actually wants to walk home with us as
friends, or if she’d rather sit in a luxury car and drive home, relaxing in
it. Even though walking is way worse than driving, sometimes it can be
fun and have good reasons—like exercising your body by running or
jogging, having a quiet moment to yourself, or just exploring the town
around you.
But I don’t think Nellie would care about that, because she literally
has everything she needs at home. So, I kind of understand why she
wouldn’t want to walk back with us.
Anyway, Jayson and I reached our street, and since we live next to
each other, it didn’t take long for us to get home at the same time.
I heard some voices in the kitchen and went to check it out. It was
my Uncle Eddie talking to my mom, and I was really happy—and
surprised—to see him. Uncle Eddie has been in our hometown,
Australia, for as long as I can remember. The last time I saw him was
when I was ten, and now I’m fifteen. He was the only one in my family
who made me feel like myself sometimes.
