THE LIFE OF A TEENAGE GIRL
“So, this year, I’ve decided—maybe I should try getting a…
partner. You know, since eleventh grade is full of romance and not even
learning.”
Jayson paused, staring right into the screen. Then he folded his lips
and cleared his throat. “Um… you mean, like a boyfriend?”
“Yeah, and I’ve even made a list of qualities and things I want my
boyfriend to be.”
I started reading the things I’d written on the list to him, and after
about three seconds, he stopped me mid–sentence.
“Okay, Kandis…” His voice sounded like he was in pain. “I—I
don’t really think it’s a good idea to do this.”
“Why? I thought you even said you wanted a girlfriend when you
turned fourteen?”
“Yeah, but… that was two years ago, and I’m sixteen now, not
fourteen. Shouldn’t we be focusing on other important stuff?”
“Like what? School subjects? Our future career? Oh, please,
Jayson! Once in our lives, we need to find our soulmate.”
“Well, I don’t want to! I feel like I’m not ready, Kandis.”
I slowly put the list away, giving him all my attention, because I
really wanted to understand what he meant. Since ninth grade ended
for him two years ago, his first wish was to get a love partner—even
before senior year. But now, I’m bringing it up and asking to get a
boyfriend, and he’s somehow annoyed by it?
