THAT WASN’T THE PLAN


               “Jay?” My voice softened. “Are you being serious right now? One
          day you’re talking about something you really want, and the next day

          you want to forget it. What’s going on?”

               “Nothing. I’m just not feeling it today. I’m not feeling like getting
          a girlfriend.” He shrugged nonchalantly and made air quotes around

          the word girlfriend.
               I wanted to say something to defend my plan, but he stopped me

          and said he wanted to go to bed. Even though, when I checked my
          phone clock, it was just 7:30 p.m.—and we usually sleep at the same

          time, 9 p.m.

               So it was like he was finding an excuse not to talk about the plan
          anymore.

               He waved through the screen and clicked the hang–up button right

          before I said goodnight.
