THAT WASN’T THE PLAN

more than friendship—but he’s my best friend. He sometimes does this
to lift my mood if I’m sad or upset, or just to get on my nerves.

“Romance, really?” I blinked rapidly, slowly pulling back. “I

          should’ve known.”
“What can I say, Kandis? I can be a book nerd sometimes.” He

shrugged and leaned back in his seat.
After getting through History and Science, lunch finally came. I

walked into the cafeteria and headed straight to my usual spot—back
          middle, same table, same friends.

I pulled out my veggie sandwich and tea just as Chris slid into the

seat beside me. He looked at me with that soft expression—the kind
that made it impossible to know what he was thinking.

               “I see you’re a vegetarian,” he smiled.
I nodded with pleasure. “Yeah. Are you too?”

“No, but I support people who are.”
Chris leaned against my arm, his hand brushing mine. I felt

butterflies in my stomach. My face turned light pink as he took one

slice of my tomato, ate it, and winked at me.
It seemed Jayson saw it too—and was angry about it. He clenched

his fists on the table with a loud thump, which made Chris sit up straight

          in his chair.
