THE LIFE OF A TEENAGE GIRL
Alexa then came into the room, wrapped in a towel, her hair still
damp.
“Are you okay?” she asked while drying her hair with the towel.
“Yeah, why wouldn’t I be?” I opened my eyes.
“Um, well… because today, you weren’t exactly thrilled.”
“Oh, why would I be happy today?”
“Okay, Gigi, I know you’re really angry about that night, but…
I—I really am sorry. And if I hadn’t told your parents, they would’ve
found out eventually and probably told my mom about it. And I
wouldn’t be here anymore.”
I sat up on my bed and asked, confused, “What do you mean you
wouldn’t be here?”
“I’d be on a plane back to Las Vegas.”
“Why?”
“Because I made a promise. I promised my mom that I’d be on my
best behavior—including being honest and respectful. And she trusted
me. Even if I did something bad, your parents would tell my mom, and
I’d be in trouble when I go back home.”
She then looked down in misery.
“So… there was no choice but to tell my parents.”
“Oh.”
I was really surprised—because if we had kept the secret, my best
friend would’ve been leaving me here, in this city and new school, and
going back to Las Vegas. All because of me.
She came to sit beside me on the bed and held my hand.
