THE COST OF BELONGING
“What?!”
We reached school. I took a deep breath.
“It’s gonna be fine,” I told myself. Even though I couldn’t do my
own school shopping with my best friend, nothing’s going to happen.
We entered the school—and my gosh, it was big. Bigger than my
old school back in Las Vegas.
We saw a lady who looked like a guidance counselor, so we went
up to her and asked,
“Hi, are you the guidance counselor?”
“Yes! Need any help?” She clasped her hands together.
“Yeah, we’re new here and need to get to our first class.”
“Oh, okay. Can I get your names first?”
“I’m Blythe Gigi, and she’s Beali Alexa.”
“Okay, well, unfortunately, you’ll be in different classes.”
Alexa raised her eyebrows. “Like… separated?”
“Yes. So, Alexa, your class is in room 213—down the hall to your
left. And Gigi, your class is in room 204, just two doors down the hall.”
“Uh, okay. Thanks.”
Oh no! We’re going to be separated? No way! I can’t live a day
without Alexa. She’s like a twin sister to me—and now we’re going to
be in different classes? Who am I going to talk to? Or partner with, in
case?
“I’m so sorry, bestie, but… like I said, you got this! We got this,”
Alexa said, smiling.
“But what if I have my panic attack again?!” I said nervously.
