THE COST OF BELONGING
“Look, I know we were supposed to keep it a secret, but those
things were exactly the stuff your mom bought for us. But these are
just… I don’t know, regular and old-fashioned. But it doesn’t matter—
it doesn’t matter how we dress to school or what things we bring.
Because even if kids bully us for it, I know I’ve got my best friend
beside me to beat them up!”
We both giggled.
“Gigi, you’re my best friend—my only best friend. The first person
who became my friend. You’re always by my side. So let’s not let
school stuff get into our heads. It’s gonna be our first day of school,
and… I want it to be the best first day of school, okay?”
I smiled and hugged her.
“Okay.”
“And I’m sorry for getting angry at you. I was just… so happy, and
then that happened.”
“It’s okay. But I hope you can forgive me.”
“Totally.”
