THE COST OF BELONGING
Ange leaned back in her chair and said, “Milliken Mall. It just
opened last week.”
Faye added, “And thousands of people are going there—mostly
because all the shops are high-end brands!”
“What do you mean?”
“It’s like, you know… Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and stuff,” Faye
answered.
“And we’re planning on going there today,” Ange uttered.
“Oh, cool! Hope you guys have fun,” I said, turning back to the
board.
“Uh, we’re thinking of going… on lunch break, though,” she
added.
“But that’s illegal. You can’t go anywhere while on school premises.”
“Yeah, but we can’t even go after school because our moms won’t
allow us. And some boys will be going there during lunch break
anyway, so we thought of going with them,” Faye said, winking
jokingly.
“But—”
Ange interrupted me. “C’mon! It’ll be fun. And besides, no one will
know because… we’ll be going during lunch break. Technically
sneaking out.”
“Yeah, don’t you want new branded stuff?” Faye added.
I sighed. “Alright, but can I come?”
“Of course you can!” Ange said.
