IT WAS NEVER JUST SUMMER


          “What are you doing here, sitting on a bench?” I asked, putting my
          hands on my hips.

          “Uh, I decided to take a break from learning in school—learning class

          today—and came here.”
          “Oh, okay. Shocking, we met again, huh?”

          “Yeah. By the way, are you good from the pain last night?”
          “Yeah, I’m good. What about you?”

               He tilted his head, a bit confused.
          “Well, I hit my big head on you, so—”

               He chuckled. “Yeah, your head’s so big, they might mistake it for

          a construction boulder.”
               “Wow, thanks for the compliment.”

               We both laughed at our jokes.
               We kept talking, but somehow, we ended up just… staring at each

          other. Our eyes met and locked, and for a second, it felt weirdly cool—
          almost  romantic.  I  didn’t  even  know  why.  But  I  blinked  it  off  and

          picked the conversation back up like nothing happened.

               “Uh, anyway, I was calling you to say thank you for helping me
          get home.”

          “No worries,” he smiled.

               Then I said something embarrassing that almost ended our time
          right then.

               “I don’t know… there was something honest about it. It caught me
          off guard—in a good way,” I said, my voice a little lower than usual. I
