weird, he thought.


It took no time to get Tommy to tell everything he knew and

make up more. He told of finding the object. He told of the
hairspray scene at Steve’s sister’s house. He told of the scene
at the bar with that horrible girl Kara and how Trash had sent
him here to Greenville to bring the Commander and his people
on a wild goose chase. He told of how they borrowed Ethan’s
car to drive to Washington, D. C. to find someone who could
destroy the object because it was too powerful to be allowed to
fall into the ‘wrong hands’. He told of how everything was
Trash’s fault. The commander wondered if any of this was true,

or if this traumatized boob was reciting some cheesy science
fiction book he had read. This was nuts.


Just before noon the Commander received news that Steve
Heinz had used a credit card in Newark, New Jersey to buy
lunch. Two helicopters were en route to transport him and his
team to Newark. Seconds later, he received another call telling

him that when local police arrived on the scene in Newark, they
were told that their fugitives were involved in a non-moving car
accident, in which their Lexus was totaled, then they
disappeared in a limousine with a well-dressed man and a little
frail old lady headed for points unknown. The two crashed cars
were picked up by wreckers nobody had ever heard of, and no
towing service within thirty miles had any record picking up
any Lexus at that time. It was as if their presence was simply
