"I can't talk about it right now. I am too upset. I'll be there in
about six hours."
"Okay..."
With that Tommy hung up the phone. Steve was left pondering
the strange call. Why would Tommy drive all the way from
Virginia to Maine for his help? He made it sound like he had
held up a liquor store. Steve shrugged and thought it would
sort itself out soon enough.
Steve was very funny, witty, smart, creative, unassuming and
stable lifelong bachelor of thirty-four. He would drink any beer
handed to him. If he was getting drunk he drank light beer. If
he was drinking socially, he would get a microbrew. On special
occasions he would drink imported beer. He looked and acted
normal to those watching him from the outside, however, he
was a very, very odd human being. Although human beings
had been evolving for millenia upon millenia, very few of them
made any attempt to be intellectually honest with themselves.
They allowed their unconscious "self" to be so undisciplined
and indulgent that to take an unbiased look inward would be
painfully embarrassing, so they didn't. In most people, the
"self" that feels things could not stand to have its world
constantly rattled by the clear, dispassionate ever-reaching
sight of a courageous intellect. It would be like taking a very
selfish, temperamental child and putting them in the care of an
emotionless fault-finding master. Instead, the normal person
