Steve had learned, no, he intuited that if the intellect became
caretaker of that selfish child and built its confidence little by
little, the child would then seek out that clear vision of the
intellect and become even stronger. He learned to allow the
intellect free reign as a mental tool, but not as a separate
"self". The intellect and the "self" then form a strange
symbiosis that allows the intellect to execute its clear
emotionless inventory of the universe uninterrupted by the

needs of the self, while the self is allowed to remain semi-
indulgent and do as it wants as long as it does not hamper the
ability of the intellect to reason. There were limits. It is almost
as if the intellect becomes a benevolent parasite co-existing
with, but separate from, the "self". In other words, he was a
bit of a complex bastard.

This was a troublesome state for a human being to be in.
Certainly, it had its wonderful advantages. The ability to
process any information quickly, thoroughly, without prejudice
and to make reasonable logical decisions in the face of
extraordinary odds was a very positive trait. Those who knew
Steve were always in awe of this ability. It also isolated him
from others because they could never predict his behavior and
interpreted this inability to predict him, in their own indulgent
