4. Intermediate fluency
At this stage, which may last for a year or more after
speech emergence, learners typically have a vocabulary of as
many as 6,000 words. They usually acquire the ability to
communicate in writing and speech using more complex
sentences. This crucial stage is also when learners begin actually
thinking in their second language, which helps them gain more
proficiency in speaking it. Students in this stage gradually make
the transition to more elaborate speech. With continued
comprehensible input and communication-focused interactions,
students may begin to link familiar phrases and generate
sentences to express their ideas. Teachers need to continually
model language usage, extend receptive vocabulary, and provide
frequent opportunities for students to produce language in
comfortable situations.
