Community Leadership Initiative (Creating an Impact, Delivering Change)
This component challenges them to take on leadership roles in community service projects.
Participants must identify a community need and find practical solutions that promote positive
outcomes while understanding cultural differences. They are encouraged to collaborate with
individuals from diverse backgrounds, showcasing their leadership skills and contributing to
service-oriented, culturally sensitive initiatives. This section anticipates student/youth-initiated
activities that bring meaningful contributions to the community, nationally or internationally.
Objective:
To build leadership skills while serving the needs of the community.
The Gold Level participant can take the initiative/project individually or in small groups.
PARTICIPATION IN THE NYAA JUNIOR PROGRAMME
In 2020, the NYAA Junior Programme pilot project was initiated with the support of the Ministry
of Education's Character & Citizenship Education Department. The pilot project involved seven
primary schools and three uniformed organisations.
The NYAA Junior Programme, known as The Butterfly Award, was officially launched by President
Halimah Yacob at the NYAA 30th Anniversary Celebration on 27 October 2022. Mr Heng Swee
Keat, Deputy Prime Minister Coordinating Minister for Economic Policies and Chairman of the
NYAA Advisory Board, witnessed the event. The NYAA Junior Programme is administered by the
NYAA Council and supported by The Stephen Riady Foundation.
THE NYAA JUNIOR PROGRAMME – THE BUTTERFLY AWARD
The NYAA Junior Programme is based on individual challenges. It presents young students with a
balanced, non-competitive programme of voluntary activities that encourage personal discovery
and growth, self-reliance, responsibility to themselves, and service to their community.
The criteria for an award are based on individual improvement through persistence and
achievement, tailored to each participant's specific capabilities and condition.
OPERATIONAL PRINCIPLES
Participants must be between the ages of 9 and 13 years. They can sign up through their schools,
organisations or as individuals. The basic structure of the Junior Programme consists of four
mandatory components: Service Learning, Outdoor Appreciation, Healthy Living, and Family
Bonding. Participants pay a registration fee of $7.00 each.
Service Learning (Learning to Serve)
• Inculcate a spirit of voluntary service by encouraging young individuals to assist those in
need.
The Service Learning component of the NYAA Junior Programmes aims to instil in students a
strong sense of responsibility towards their community, nurturing them to become active and
responsible citizens. Students will undertake activities where they provide voluntary service to
others and understand the importance of giving back.
