Social Studies – Protecting Our Environment
At the heart of the Singapore Social Studies Curriculum
by the Ministry of Education is the preparation
of students to be citizens of tomorrow by helping
them better understand the interconnectedness of
Singapore and the world they live in and appreciate
the complexities of the human experience, and
drawing on meaningful aspects of society and interest
to the students.
In June 2021, Ms Cheryl Lee, NYAA Gold Award holder
(2017 Cohort), contributions to the United Nations
Climate Change Conference Panel Discussion on Youth
for Climate organised by the government of Japan in
Madrid, Spain, were featured in the Social Studies’
Publication for Normal (Technical) Secondary School’s
students. Ms Cheryl Lee of Singapore moderated the

#NextGen Video Challenge - Telling The Climate Change Story
The World News Day 2021 event in Singapore, helmed
by The Straits Times on 28 September 2021, was a
success despite the COVID-19 pandemic. NYAA, a
close partner of the World Association of Newspapers
and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) and Un Youth
Climate Report, successfully organized the #NextGen
Video Challenge – Telling the Climate Change Story to
commemorate World News Day 2021.
There was a tie for the First Prize, which goes to “The
Wild Side of Singapore – Coastal Protectors” by David
Adam James Lee of the School of Design and Media,
ITE College Central and “Master Waster Chris”, led
by Celest Tan from the School of Business, Nanyang
Polytechnic, Third Prize was “Unconscious Decisions”
from Nanyang Polytechnic. In addition, three
Honourable Mentions were awarded to ITE College
East and Methodists Girls’ School. The two winning
videos were screened at COP 26, Glasgow, Scotland
and were well received.The winning videos were
also screened on World News Day on 28 September
2021 and were viewed by more than 100 countries
worldwide.
