Club Coach’s Report 2008
Jack Mundey
Another Clam’s year has passed with this year being our most successful for some time.
Right from our first training session on January 14, I could tell that we were going to have a
very successful year. What impressed me most was the commitment to fitness and skills
training by the players. With the guidance of Darren Drury and Georgie, we were able to
form a very formidable pack. This resulted in our first win against Medowie in many years,
although Fish claims that his refereeing ability helped us over the line.
Throughout the year, the enthusiasm to training and playing helped to make the Clams one of
the two main contenders for the 2008 Southern Premiership. This has been in contrast to past
years where at times training sessions have consisted of 6 players or less. This year we
managed only one training session with less than 15 players. Along with the 3am Friday
night curfew, this dedication to each other showed with the great results on the field.
Sadly for us, we fell one win short of what would have been a well deserved premiership. To
me however, the point that we have turned into an actual Rugby team through the
commitment to each other and to training is a significant achievement for our club and as
players you should all be extremely proud of your efforts through out the year.
I would like to take the time to thank, Crooksy, Nigel Hoy, Andy Ellem, Laura Silcock, Di
Farrar, Judy Yates, John Scott, Bruce and Pam Johnson, Richard Everingham and Terena
Hoy for all your work behind the scenes. Without the efforts of these people, we would
struggle to get on the field week in and week out. Thanks
Thankyou to Darren and Georgie for helping me not having to lower my IQ by talking to
forwards for any longer than I had to. These men turned a group of very good individual
players into the most formidable pack in the comp. Without their ongoing help, we would
not have turned into the team that we have become.
Thankyou to my wife Kim and my family for supporting my decision to coach throughout a
year of late Monday, Wednesday and Saturday nights.
And finally I would like to thank all the players who turned up for 2008 and your efforts to
the Clams Rugby Club which has been such a big part of my life. I appreciate your patience
with a first year coach and the trials and errors that I made through the year. Believe me,
with similar ticker next year, this club will go onto being up there in ability with the
Northern Clubs.
