I remembered a farmer I knew about five miles away had
a “teleporter”, a fork truck with extendable nose that
could get at the horse who was just inside a building. By
now it was about 4.30am and we had all been trying to
help the old horse for several hours.
I telephoned the farmer, Mr Banham, who despite the
unearthly hour agree to come and see if he could help. In
the meantime, the fire officer was now concerned about
the horse having been down on the ground for a
considerable time. He asked me to telephone our vet and
enquire if raising the horse after such a long time would
involve complications.
When I eventually got Julian, Goliath's personal vet, out
of his bed and explained what was going on, he veritably
exploded with “just get the horse up by whatever way
you....can”!
The fork lift arrived in good time and the firemen had
some slings they used on cows from time to time that
became stuck in something or other.
It only took about 5 minutes then and Goliath was on his
feet. Slings around the horse in two places, the fork lift
with its “extending nose” pushed its way under the roof
where Golly lay and just lifted him onto his feet.
He wobbled a little but seemed non the worse except for
grazes and the large scar on his flank had reopened due
to him scuffling around on the uneven ground for such a
long time. We could see now just how he had got into the
state he was when we first saw him.
