Page 31 - GOLIATH THE TALLEST HORSE IN THE WHOLE WORLD
P. 31
Andy agreed with all this and quickly drew a plan to build
a hydraulic crane onto the rear of one of our two Ford
Major diesel tractors. The Major is a large lump of
machinery, simply constructed and heavy.
The tractor we chose to use was the one where Andy
himself had rebuilt the engine the previous year!
With the plan came drawings for the component pieces
and we were soon on our way to Rundle's at New
Bolingbroke my old employers and good friends to ask
their help.
It was Saturday morning but before lunch we were on
our way home with everything we needed including a
three stage hydraulic ram.
Andy spent the whole Saturday afternoon with the
Centre's welding equipment fitting his project together.
The crane was as simple as could be, the main jib was
manually adjustable in length to allow for reaching over
the horse as he lay on the floor, the lifting mechanism
was simply operated by the tractor lift control working the
hydraulic ram.
We knew the actual lift would not need to be more than
about four feet to get the horses legs clear of the ground.
The extra large ram with big fluid capacity we knew
would provide the lift quickly with plenty of power to
spare. It was a wonder and worked perfectly every time
Golly had a catastrophe!
