Loading and Transporting Waste on the Highway

Avon Material Supplies ltd employ the services of a Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor
(DGSA) to support the business and provide useful information as required.

Only trained ADR staff will collect, handle and transport Hazardous Waste
Please speak to the operative loading and ensure where possible that the vehicle is loaded
with light material first onto the bottom of the load where possible. Then place the heavier
material on top to help contain material within the body.

Remove any material that is overhanging the body before leaving the loading area.

Please check your sheet or nets are complete with no large holes before loading and if any
defects are identified you call your manager to discuss how these can be safely repaired.

Discuss your loading requirements with the site machine operator and ensure that any
difficult material is loaded to minimise the risk of material leaving the lorry whilst on the
highway and littering the verges and countryside.

AMS Ltd and the driver have a legal obligation to contain the waste they are moving whilst in
transit on the Public Highway. The driver could be prosecuted for an insecure load and fined
£100 on the spot by the Police or DVSA. This will then be passed to the traffic commissioner
which could then lead to a public inquiry. The Environment Agency will also likely be notified
            with additional penalty’s likely applied.
