8.  Before any blockages are attempted to be cleared, the loading machine driver will be
                notified to stop and the picking line must be switched off and isolated. Always ensure
                that lone workers do not attempt to clear blockages. When working in confined spaces
                operators must ensure that they have good ventilation, good lighting and a means of
                ‘escape’ and a buddy present, confined spaces on the MRF would include the trommel
                screen and working around roll on/off bins or any other area where visibility, working
                area or escape is diminished.

            10. Before starting any maintenance work on the MRF, the machine must be switched off
                and  isolated.  Any  Hot-Works  must  have  authorisation  from  the  Manager  or  site
                supervisor and a permit to work issued.

            11. When working on the MRF do not obstruct the walkways with tools or equipment as this
                presents a trip hazard. Keep walkways clear at all times.

            12. All operators need to familiarise themselves with the location of all safety equipment,
                First Aid kits and eye wash stations.

            13. Extra care must be taken when walking around on site to avoid Slips Trips and Falls
                please refer to section 28

            Working Procedure should a breakdown on the picking belt occur

                a)  Notify your manager immediately that a breakdown has occurred, if the breakdown is
                    going to take longer than 1 hour to fix then waste sorting on the transfer station floor may
                    be required.

                b)  Before picking on the floor begins ensure that the all staff are briefed and understand the
                    separation procedure below. (Person v Vehicle)

                       •  This  procedure  is  to  ensure  that  no  staff  are  working  within  10  metres  of  an

                           operating machine, vehicle or LGV.
                       •  Agreed Refuges are set up where staff can safely wait whilst machinery is operating
                           or waste being tipped.
                       •  Barriers are in place to prevent unauthorised access to the working area.
                       •  Two  way  communication  using  radios  are  available  to  machine  operators,  the
                           reversing assistants, weighbridge operator and staff working on the floor.

                       •  Reversing assistants are in place and understand their role.
                       •  If these procedures are not followed then disciplinary procedures may be taken.
