1. The operators on the MRF will possibly be unqualified when they start employment.
All new staff will have undergone an induction but must be fully trained before they are allowed
to work unsupervised. They will be allocated a buddy to work with whilst they gain experience
2. The operator MUST carry out pre-shift checks on the picking line before starting work
which include conveyor damage and this must be recorded on the daily defect sheets.
Any defects found must be reported to your manager where instructions will be given in
how to proceed.
3. While the machine is operating or not isolated it is forbidden:
to climb onto or “jump” across a conveyor
to remove any guards.
to attempt to clear any blockages.
to gain access into the trommel or screen.
to walk across the building to gain access to the picking station always use the

4. The machine has safety labels and warning symbols applied and these must be obeyed.

5. There are safety devices fitted on the machine to protect the machine and the operator.
They must never be tampered with or altered in any way, and if defective must be
reported to your manager immediately and recorded on the daily inspection sheet.
These safety devices include:
➢ Emergency stops – all drives on the MRF stop immediately.
➢ Overload protection – the MRF is stopped immediately if there is an electrical
overload on a conveyor for example.
➢ Audible warning – an alarm sounds before machine starts.
➢ Visual warning – lights flash before machine starts.
➢ Guards – all nip points are guarded to protect the operators from injury.
3. Operators must wear ear protection where signs indicate.
